It is the first week of January, and I’ve spent the last several days in some serious reflection about what was good about 2017 and what I need to focus on for improvement. The Lord gave me my word for 2018, and I shared with you that process in this post. If you haven’t done this before- asked the Lord for a word- give it a try this year! Then, once you have your word, do some study on it! Open up your Bible app and search for scriptures about your word, open the dictionary and research the meanings of your word. Research the antonyms too! Sometimes you will get some real nuggets doing that!
In addition to my word for the year, I’ve set some goals. Looking to this blog, which is very much a diary of my thoughts, I want to improve some things. I believe that the Lord has put me on this earth to be an encourager. This is one of my most prominent Spiritual Gifts. I’ve been writing on this blog for several years (including at the previous domain) and I have a nice handful of people who read it and are encouraged by it. Writing out my feelings also helps me to process through them and gives the Lord another area where He can work on me 🙂 I want to try to focus more this year on you- the reader. I will still write through my feelings, but I want to know if there are things you are struggling with too. Maybe it’s an area I’ve already dealt with and we can work together to think of solutions and systems to help. Or maybe it’s an area we can explore together. I want this blog to be one that you come to regularly, and that you share with your circle. I want to work on expanding my influence, because I believe there are more people out there who have the same inner struggles and thoughts who just need an encouraging word.
I’d also like to grow the Nailing Jello to a Tree Sisterhood. I so desire that to be a place where we truly encourage and pray for each other. I want it to be that safe place where you can go in the middle of the night and say, “help, I’m drowning here” and have your sisters gather around and hold you up. I want to celebrate each other in there, and encourage each other to always be growing. If you haven’t joined yet, please do, and don’t wait for me to start a conversation- just pop in and introduce yourself!
So, looking to January, my focus in my life is my home. I fully believe that it is very difficult to get your life in order if your home is chaos. I have lived in a fluid state of chaos for several years and it’s time to walk out of that chaos and into peace. I really began this journey in earnest last fall when I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. I wrote a post about it here. It’s time to revisit some of those concepts in my home now that Christmas has come and thrown up in my house 😉 I am feeling very overwhelmed by the clutter already. My Littles’ room is a complete disaster. This alone makes me feel like a failure. I know this has this effect on me, so I need to really get it under control fast. I’m not even going to address the state of my own room here LOL.
I’ve also joined an amazing website called Mom Mastery University. With it comes a 90 day challenge, and I chose home for my first challenge. It is really a phenomenal program that I am very excited to be a part of. As I get comfortable there, I’m also going through their mentorship training program. A good friend of mine who I used to go to church with several years ago has been recommending this to me for about a year and a half. It was not the right time for me then, but I believe it is the right time now. If you are feeling in a rut and need some help I can not recommend this program enough! And, I’d be incredibly honored to be your mentor if you join MMU. There’s a FREE 3 day mom boot camp that I went through before joining MMU. It gives you a very small taste of what it’s all about. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me! You’ll definitely be hearing more about this from me in the future as I work through the program!
So, as I’m going through my first 90 day challenge with MMU, which focuses on the home she had a course on FlyLady. FlyLady is not new to me, I used her techniques several years ago and had great success with them. I really don’t know why I stopped, but I think it might have been that I never really personalized her program to fit my own house. Flylady talks about morning routines and evening routines and zones. I never thought to break my home up into my own 4/5 zones and work from there. The MMU course challenged me to do just that. So, I’ve got my house broken up into zones, and this week is Zone 1: Kitchen, Dining Room, Laundry Room. I am challenging myself to spend 30 minutes a day deep cleaning and/or decluttering in my zone of the week. Last night before I went to bed, I cleaned the fridge. Boy did it need it! I am starting a list (in pencil) in my Bullet Journal of all the things that need deep cleaned in each zone as I tackle them. I think the key to success here is to personalize it as much as possible. I also sat down with my kids and created morning and evening routines for each of them. I’ll keep you posted on how this works for us. If you are using these techniques I’d love to hear about how it’s working (or not working) for you as well!
Another thing I’m doing is daily scripture writing in my bullet journal. I am following a plan created by Sweet Blessings this month, you can find it by going to her page and click on the link on the right for scripture writing plans. It is already really impacting me. The entry that I wrote out in my BUJO for January 2 was this:
Lamentations 3:22-26: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in him.” The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
Just the act of writing this out solidifies it in my mind and reminds me of the greatness of God. If you haven’t tried a scripture writing challenge, I recommend it highly! You are not too late to start January at all! If you don’t want to catch up, just start where you are and commit to finish the month out. I know you will be glad!
Ok, so looking forward for the month here’s what you can expect from me:
- Music Monday posts on Mondays
- Weekly check in post on Thursday
- For January I will be focusing on getting my home and life in order- I hope you will join me!
